Over the past century, a small number of people have become symbols of the triumph of the human spirit in overcoming injustice. Among these great figures is Nelson Mandela, a man who has truly dedicated his life to the pursuit of democracy and equality. As a consequence of his steadfast resistance, he was sentenced to a lifetime in prison and spent 27 years behind bars. When offered his own freedom in exchange for acceptance of the apartheid Bantustan policy, Mandela refused to compromise his ideals—even in the face of grave injustice; he never fought racism with racism.

Nelson Mandela once said, “it always seems impossible until it is done.” His own life and accomplishments are testament to this—after finally being released from prison in 1990, he went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 1994 voted for the first time in the election that ended apartheid. Mandela became the first President of a democratic South Africa—a multi-racial democracy that would not have been possible without his lifelong devotion to justice. Nelson Mandela continues to be a symbol for change and urges us to remember the past in order to act in the present.
